Treatment to lighten hair

Many people want to achieve a slightly lighter look in their hair for summer, and over the past few years I have found some things that work very well at lightening your colour at home without expensive dyes or going to the salon. Also, as this is mainly using natural ingredients, it should do little to no damage on your hair.

Lemon Juice
This method works well at lightening your hair by a few shades so that it looks natural. This is also a good method at getting highlights.
You will need:
3 to 4 Lemons
1/4 to 1/2 a cup of water
A spray bottle
A hairbrush

As you can see, most of these items are usually found in peoples houses, and so it is very cheap.

Mix the lemon juice and the water in a bowl then transfer the mixture onto your hair with a spray bottle for complete coverage. Brush through your hair and sit outside in the sunlight as the UV rays and the heat will speed up the process.
Wait for your hair to dry then wash it out with a good conditioner as lemon juice can be drying to hair.

Honey

By adding honey and olive oil into your hair you can make your hair lighter. This is because honey has natural lightening qualities, and so if you sit out in the sun it can lighten your hair.
You will need:
1/2 a cup of honey
1/2 a cup of olive oil
A spray bottle
A hairbrush

Mix the honey and olive oil together until the mixture is smooth, then coat your hair with it. Wait in the sun for a few hours - or until dry, then wash it out.

A Mixture of Many

This is perhaps my favourite of the methods as it works the fastest, but can leave your hair feeling slightly hard if it dries into your hair and you don't wash it out.

You will need:
3 to 4 lemoms
2 to 3 tablespoons of honey
1 tablespoon of olive oil
A generous dash of cinnamon ( if you desire a red tone)
1 to 2 tablespoons of egg (optional)
1 tablespoon of conditioner
A spray bottle
A hairbrush

Mix the ingredients together well, until there are no lumps. Leave it to set for about an hour, after which you need to mix it together again. Place the mixture into a spray bottle and shake well, if the honey is not already mixed in well - if it has set at the bottom - place in microwave for about 30 seconds, and shake well.
Apply the mixture to all of your hair through the use of the spray bottle and brush though hair. Leave your hair to dry in the sun and then wash the mixture out. Follow with a good conditioner.

Be sure not to use any of these methods on a daily basis as they can damage your hair.
These methods will take multiple applications to see any results so hang in there.
These will not bring about major change in hair colour, they are only progressive, and they will start with a shade or two lighter than your natural colour

Expect a change like this: (maybe more, maybe less)
  • Dark brown to a lighter brown
  • Light brown to a dark blonde
  • Dark blonde to a lighter blonde
  • Dark red to a reddish brown/blonde
  • Light red to a light brown or blonde
  • Black to dark brown, or highlights.
